The Year 2026 Declared the Year of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent Day of the Devs showcase was a delight to watch, my primary conclusion was perhaps unexpected: I am convinced that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
Exactly five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a gathering of frogs is called an army, it feels they are staking their claim.
A Legacy of Leaping
Frogs are not at all new to the world of games. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the iconic froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. Yet, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.
A simple search for "frog game" on Steam yields an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.
Tracking the Tadpole Trend
To quantify this rise, I conducted a thorough analysis into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or featured in screenshots.
The data tell a compelling story: a steady uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to almost 60 in 2025.
This dramatic growth prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The amphibian's elevated place in the broader culture is also apparent elsewhere, such as the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs offer built-in design advantages for game developers.
- Weird Little Guys: They are incredibly easy to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a highlight in any game.
- Innovative Systems: Their stretchy limbs and prehensile tongues lend themselves to a wide array of unique mechanics.
Several the featured titles directly leverage these traits. Take the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.
The Leap Into 2026
So, what can we expect in 2026? Given five frog games already announced before the year has officially commenced—and the possibility for more—the stage is set for it to be the most significant year yet.
When these games perform well—and historically, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be entering a genuine amphibian entertainment revival.
