Everton Squad Members Applaud Gueye Following Sincere Apology for Michael Keane Incident
Idrissa Gueye received a warm ovation from his Everton teammates after delivering an explanation for his shocking dismissal during the recent victory at Old Trafford.
Rare Incident in English Football
Gueye became the initial Premier League player to be dismissed for hitting a fellow player in nearly two decades when he slapped his defensive colleague during the match. The Toffees' display was remarkable as they competed with 10 men for the majority of the game, including added time, to secure David Moyes' first win at Old Trafford as a visiting manager in multiple tries.
'My first apology goes to Michael Keane,' Gueye stated on social media. 'I accept complete responsibility for my actions.'
Dressing Room Reaction
The Senegalese international was unable to secure an opportunity to speak with Moyes or his teammates at half-time. Afterwards, with the away dressing room buzzing after the 1-0 win, the 36-year-old asked to speak to the entire group and Keane specifically.
- Gueye apologized to the defender for striking him across the face
- The heated 13th-minute altercation occurred after a misplaced pass in his own defensive third
- Additionally he said sorry to the squad for putting them with a monumental task
- His apology were warmly received by the squad
Possible Consequences
The 36-year-old may yet be punished by the club despite the manager's admission that he appreciates his team members fighting with each other. Moyes has a standard punishment process for dismissals and cautions, including fines, which is likely to be implemented in Gueye's case.
Suspension and International Duty
The Merseyside club may find themselves without their influential midfielder until the January. The Senegalese international will complete a three-game suspension against Newcastle, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest but could be selected for Africa Cup of Nations duty by his national team before he becomes eligible to play against the Blues on 13 December.
'Emotions can run high,' he added. 'But nothing justifies such behaviour.'
Rival Reaction
Meanwhile, Mathijs de Ligt claimed United of lacking urgency in the recent loss, which halted their winning streak at multiple matches.
- 'The Premier League is not for the weak,' stated the Netherlands international
- 'We lacked that urgency to score goals,'
- 'Against a team like Everton,' who drop back it becomes challenging
The Red Devils travel to Crystal Palace for Sunday's lunchtime start. 'Our upcoming match is absolutely crucial,' commented the defender. 'We have to bounce back from this performance.'
