British Expands Methanol Poisoning Advisory List with An additional 11 Nations

Industrial alcohol caution sign

British authorities has added an additional eleven more countries to its official advisory roster about the risks of methanol contamination from adulterated spirits.

The updated warning now includes Bangladesh, India, Iran, Jordan, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Morocco, Nepal, Papua New Guinea, and Rwanda after what officials describe as "a worldwide rise in the frequency of documented incidents" of toxic alcohol poisoning.

Only a few weeks ago, authorities had already added Ecuador, Japan, Kenya, Mexico, Nigeria, Peru, Russia, and Uganda to the current list, following several serious incidents including the fatal death of 6 visitors in Laos in 2024.

Travelers are being advised that even small amounts of methanol can lead to permanent eye damage or loss of life within twelve to forty-eight hours.

Exactly what is Toxic Alcohol and In what way is it Used?

Toxic alcohol is a toxic industrial alcohol often used in antifreeze, windscreen washer fluid, and paint thinner. This chemical is not intended for drinking.

Although it is generated during the production of beverages, licensed producers lower it to low, safe levels for human consumption through the purification method.

But in some countries, it is clandestinely blended into beverages to reduce expenses, and because it is tasteless and odourless, it is impossible to identify.

Authorities' Guidance for Tourists

Foreign Office official the minister said that all travellers should know the symptoms of toxic alcohol toxicity.

"While consuming alcohol in foreign countries, opt for trusted places and avoid local brews or unspecified beverages," the minister said.

"Should anything feels off, such as a fatigue that's way worse than normal or vision problems – contact a doctor right away."

The entire register of countries identified as presenting a danger of industrial alcohol poisoning currently features: Brazil, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Kenya, Laos, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Nepal, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, Thailand, Turkey, Uganda, and Vietnam.
